Maybe his death, and the story of my grief that surrounds me on all sides even still, is about the global feeling we all feel of being adrift from loss. But more specifically it might be about the death of the things we hold as fundamental to our sense of the world and our wellbeing.
This Week in Grief, another piece from alarmingly talented friend Emily.

The Spencerian: trevorgilks: Trevor was a dear friend to many of us, and a bright spot...

trevorgilks:

Trevor was a dear friend to many of us, and a bright spot in our lives. As we’ve gathered together over the last few days, our hearts have been full of wonderful memories alongside our sadness. He left an indelible mark on all of our lives.

Please add your stories,…

Spencer said all the things I wanted to say, and better.

I could use a little Mr. Rogers today. It may be naive but I think life would be better if we all had a little Mr. Rogers every day.

So today Angelina Jolie had double mastectomy, which is the removal of one’s breasts, to prevent Breast cancer. So instead of praising Angelina on her bravery, men on Twitter decided to ridicule her, even calling her stupid for removing her breasts. For those of you on Tumblr that are attacking Feminists about being delusional about sexism against women and misogyny here’s your fucking proof that sexism and misogyny exists.

oh my fucking god these men can die in a fire

more genuine ignorance time

(see here for the original ignorance time.)

so, as you may be aware, I am dating the heck out of and/or generally smug about smasuch, and well, it’s best to be blunt: we’re a couple of dudes who are totally okay with PDA and generally we’re pretty good about it but sometimes zero fucks are given (often because one of us was just a huge nerd at the other.)

We’ve all been there. Don’t even.

What’s been weird, though, has been the affirmations from random strangers we get, and truth be told, I have no idea how to respond. Examples include these folks:

  • the dude at the James Blake show who looked over, waited until we were done, and then let us know how he was jealous because the show was all slow jams.
  • the woman who approached us after the encore to tell us we were an inspiration before giving us awkward hugs and stumbling towards coat check.
  • the guy we walked past on Nelson who noticed we were holding hands and told us he loved it, and us.
  • the French guy who stopped Steve while he was in line getting drinks at a drag show to tell him that he’d been watching us for a bit and that we had something worth holding on to. (nb: I’d spent like fifteen minutes dancing shamelessly up on Steve; I don’t know how our relationship dynamic was inferred from watching that.)

Anyway: I have no idea where on annoyance/flattery liminality to put these; I certainly don’t think that we’d get the same response if, say, Steve was a UFC bro and I was his floozy but then I wonder how much of it is actually about us and more about them. So far, it’s been a lot of “thanks?” and exchanged sheepish grins in response but I’ve sort of been wondering if there’s anything else to be said (or if I should be saying anything at all, really.)

thoughts, gang?

    • #it's way better than being biked alongside and being told you're going to hell
    • #that happened in toronto
    • #also I was once applauded in portland for holding hands with a dude I was seeing
